and gives scientific background for defining process efficiency and
sustainability metrics. [It] is an interesting addition to many
traditional chemical engineering courses, particularly transport
phenomena, separation processes, reactor engineering, and process
design.

2010. Review of "Non-equilibrium thermodynamics of heterogeneous systems" by Mathematical Reviews:
This textbook may serve as a basis for an introductory course on
the theory of non-equilibrium thermodynamics in heterogeneous media. It
will appeal to both mathematicians and mathematics graduate students.
The reader will find useful complementary materials included: a large
number of good examples and exercises are solved for the benefit of the
reader. The reviewer highly recommends this book as a basic reference
on the non-equilibrium thermodynamics of heterogeneous systems.

2009. Review of "Non-equilibrium thermodynamics of heterogeneous systems",
J.Non-Equilib. Thermodyn. 34 (2009) 93-96 by P. Van, Department of
Theoretical Physics, Research Institute for Particle and Nuclear
Physics, Budapest, Hungary
"The detailed theoretical and experimental studies of the
investigated systems show every well the deep insight that one can get
from clear theoretical approaches. This unity of theory and experiments
is one of the most important virtues of the book. Non-equilibrium
thermodynamics - as a frame theory of classical physics - is a
foundation of several parts of engineering and can give a unified
treatment of complex systems. The book is a great example of how new
theoretical ideas - in this case, the idea of surfaces as autonomous
systems - and clever experimental work, can lead to the understanding
and development of industrial technologies.
The rigorous and conservative approach of classical irreversible
thermodynamics is an advantage of the book - a clear and solid
foundation with clear-cut ranges of validity. The broad range of
different applications demonstrates the enormous unification power of
non-equilibrium thermodynamics. The potential of the simplicity of the
approach is not yet explored in engineering. The ambitious goal of this
book is to demonstrate these possibilities by giving a treatment that
is accessible to everybody who is interested in applications and at the
same time, by giving the necessary details to everybody who is
interested in the foundations, too. This is a very good book, maybe the
best in non-equilibrium thermodynamics is the past few years."
